Mashava-Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe has castigated the torture of journalists saying that violets their right to access and disseminate information without any restrictions.

Speaking at a lecture held at Charles Austin hall in Masvingo, VMCZ Projects director Faith Ndlovu acknowledged that journalists at times make mistakes when gathering and disseminating information but they should however be immune from torture
.
“Most journalist misrepresent facts when writing their stories but if such mistakes happen there are better means to deal with that besides implementing harsh measures,” she said.

“That’s why we believe in settling issues under our Media Complaints Committee(MCC) where we address matters in a diplomatic manner,” she added.

Ndlovu however encouraged journalists to verify facts before publication to ensure that they stick to ethical conduct.

“Ethics were crafted to promote responsible journalism so verification of facts before writing   a story is very important in efforts to uphold them,” she said.

The workshop which was held under the theme, “promoting media professionalism and accountability today and tomorrow” was attended by Masvingo based journalists, editors and media students from Great Zimbabwe University.
