Met department warns public over heavy rains

Meteorological Department Warns of Heavy Rainfall and Hailstorms Across Zimbabwe

The Meteorological Department has alerted the citizens of Zimbabwe to brace themselves for a week of heavy downpours, lightning, thunderstorms, and potential hailstorms starting from January 11, 2024, through to January 17, 2024.

The warning comes in the wake of recent flooding incidents that have claimed lives and caused damage to infrastructure, particularly affecting low-lying areas and houses situated in wetlands. Experts attribute this erratic weather pattern to the ongoing El Nino phenomenon impacting the Sub-Saharan Region.

The Met Department's warning is not to be taken lightly, as it concerns the safety and well-being of all Zimbabweans and foreign visitors alike. Residents residing in low-lying areas are strongly advised to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and their domestic animals by relocating to higher ground to mitigate potential disasters.

For farmers in the region who have yet to apply top-dressing fertilizer, it is recommended to postpone application to prevent the ammonium nitrate from being washed away by the heavy rainfall.

Motorists/ Road users are urged to exercise extreme caution while navigating the streets to avoid falling into invisible potholes, manholes, and drainage canals submerged in water. Motorists are strongly advised against attempting to cross flooded rivers, as the swift currents could sweep their vehicles away, putting lives at risk.

The Meteorological Department has called upon the public to stay informed about weather updates and to follow safety guidelines diligently during this challengingg weather period.

By heeding these precautions, individuals can help minimize the potential risks associated with the impending heavy rainfall and hailstorms.
